Of course Karoline and I decided to take in the Detroit round of the AMA Supermoto series held at Waterford Hills road racing course.
We were suprised to see an almost completely revised track layout for the 2007 event.
Missing from this years event was Doug Henry (see the right sidebar). After talking to the Yamaha crew it is apparent that Doug has a long road before he gets back on a bike, if ever. His injuries are of the nature where he may one day walk and possibly ride again or that he may not walk again. All I can say is that Doug Henry was one of the toughest and for sure one of the coolest racers I have ever met. (read my blog for my thoughts on Doug).
The track layout was even better than last years hastly put together event. This year the track was much faster and the riders all liked it. Thats great news.
Spectator turnout was ok. Nothing on par with Red Bud's National Motocross. All I can say is that if you love motorcycle racing of any form, Supermoto is for you. It really is awesome racing.
Big thumbs up to the folks at Waterford Hills Race Course for putting on a first class event!
Mark Burkhart (whom I have touted the past 3 years) was in a class alone. He just smoked the field and I fully expect that to continue as he should take the championship if he continues to ride with the focus and aggression he did at this race.
Jeff Ward and Cassidy Anderson last years 250cc Supermoto champion (I'm touting Cassidy as the rider of the future, this kid is fast). put on a heated battle for second and third with Anderson taking second, Wardy right behind in third.
Another guy I see a bright future for is Troy Herfoss. Now with KTM Troy is closing in on the top rung and ended the day forth. Michigans Chris Fillmore now riding afor Kawasaki finished 7th.
In the Lites class Racer X magazines David Pingree (I love this guy as he is not afraid to say what he feels in his writing). In the race he just flat out smoked everyone. Yamaha's Brandon Curry battled with Eric Sorby (filling in for Troy Lee) with Curry ending up second, Sorby third.
In Supermoto Unlimited Aprilia's Bennie Carlson won with Team manager David Adkins in tow. KTM's Kurt Nicoll flew in saturday night and dispite jet lag finished a fine third.
Overall I rate this event a 10. Awesome non stop racing, a kick ass Freestyle Motocross show by Trevor Vines and an ok street stunt show.
I'll say it again. If you haven't seen Supermoto, check it out as it's an awesome event .
